Reflecting on his decades of experience, Steve jokes, “I’ve spent my life digging dirt.” In truth, his career has been instrumental in shaping today’s hydrovac industry.
Steve began in the industry at a time when the technology was virtually unknown. “My goal from the beginning was to educate the marketplace about the industry. I remember early on walking into a trailer on a job site and telling someone what I was working with, they would look at me like I was from another planet, because it wasn’t really known technology, especially on the East Coast.”
The evolution of Steve’s career led to the creation of Clearsite Industrial, which he cofounded with his business partner of 15 years, Lou Galasso. Steve attributes much of his success to his relationship with Lou. “We balance each other pretty well. As Lou would put it, we’re having too much fun right now.”
Beyond leadership, Steve emphasizes the importance of a great team. He describes the structure of Clearsite as a horizontal line, rather than the traditional pyramid-like structure of leadership. “There’s no one at Clearsite who could do their job without others in the company,” he says.
In addition to this structure of interdependence and teamwork, he credits his account managers in building client relationships that earn Clearsite a reputation of trust in the industry. Steve credits this emphasis on client relationships in Clearsite’s rapid success.
His background as a contractor gave him firsthand insight into the importance of trust and reliability between client and business. “It’s a very simple recipe,” Steve explains,“Pay attention to your clients, treat them well, and deliver the best possible service. That’s why we work hard to keep our trucks in top condition and engage with our operators every day—so they remain invested in the process and committed to excellence.”
From a company that began as an idea just seven years ago, Clearsite has grown to a fleet of 32 hydrovac trucks in multiple locations along the East Coast, a testament to the vision of Steve and Lou and the dedication of the Clearsite team.
